What a space bucket actually is
Take a 5-gallon bucket (the kind hardware stores sell for $3 to $5), cut a hole in the lid for the light socket and another for a small exhaust fan, and line the inside with Mylar or flat white paint to bounce light back onto the plant. One CFL or a small LED grow bulb screws into a socket mounted through the lid. A single computer case fan, wired to a 12V adapter or USB power brick, pulls warm air out through a second hole.
The design comes from the DIY grow community (r/SpaceBuckets on Reddit has run the idea for over a decade), and it works because cannabis does not need a huge canopy to produce something smokable. One plant, kept small with training, fills a 5-gallon footprint fine.
Parts list and real cost
This is the floor, not a wishlist. Every part below is available at a hardware store or Amazon.
- 5-gallon plastic bucket with lid: $4 to $6
- 23W to 42W CFL grow bulb (2700K for flower, 6500K for veg) plus a ceramic socket: $12 to $20
- Small 80mm or 92mm computer case fan, 12V: $6 to $10
- 12V power adapter (or a USB fan and brick you already own): $5 to $10
- Mylar sheeting or a can of flat white spray paint for the interior: $6 to $10
- Small pot (1 to 3 gallon fabric pot) that fits inside the bucket: $5

CFL vs a small LED
CFLs are the traditional space bucket light because they run cool enough to sit close to the plant without a heat sink or driver, and a 2700K screw-in bulb is cheap and everywhere. The tradeoff is weak output per watt, so growth is slower than a real LED setup.
A small quantum-board LED module (20 to 30 actual watts, the kind sold for small tents) fits in a bucket lid with a bit more work and produces noticeably more growth per week. It costs more upfront ($30 to $50 versus $15 for a CFL and socket) and needs a heat sink or a bit of standoff distance from the leaves. If you already know you will do more than one cycle, spend the extra money on the LED now.
Airflow in a bucket
A sealed bucket with a hot light cooks the plant and traps humidity, which invites mold. The exhaust fan is not optional. Cut an intake hole near the bottom (covered with a bit of window screen to keep bugs and light out) and an exhaust hole near the top where the fan pulls air past the light and out. This single change is what separates a working space bucket from a dead plant.
Heads upSkipping the exhaust fan is the most common space bucket failure. Heat builds up fast in a sealed 5-gallon space, and a few hours at 95°F+ will stunt or kill a seedling. Budget for the fan before the light if money is tight.
What yield to expect
Figure 0.5 to 1 ounce of dry bud per bucket on a CFL, closer to 1 to 1.5 ounces with a small LED and some light training (topping once, a bit of LST tucked against the bucket wall). That is a fraction of a full tent's output, and it should be. A space bucket is a proof-of-concept grow, not a production setup.
Multiple buckets scale linearly and cheaply. Three buckets under a closet shelf cost about the same per plant as one bucket, just multiplied, and let you run different strains or techniques side by side without committing to a full tent.
Where space buckets fall short
Full-size autoflowers and most photoperiod strains outgrow a 5-gallon bucket's headroom quickly. Stick to compact strains, or top early and train aggressively to keep the plant short. Temperature and humidity control are rougher than a real tent since you have no dedicated intake filtration, so watch for the same pH and pest problems as any other grow, just with less room to fix them.
