Best high-CBD cannabis strains, and what each one is actually good for
A dispensary menu tag that says "high CBD" can mean two very different products: a strain that's 20% CBD and 18% THC, which will absolutely get you high, or one that's 20% CBD and under 1% THC, which mostly won't. The word on the shelf is the same. The experience is not. What actually matters is the ratio, not the label.
Near-zero THC: CBD without much of a high
These are the picks for users who want the reported calm-and-clarity effects of CBD without feeling altered, or who need to stay functional at work or with kids around.
- •ACDC: typically 18 to 20% CBD with under 1% THC. The closest thing to a pure-CBD flower most dispensaries carry.
- •Charlotte's Web: the hemp-derived strain that became famous for pediatric epilepsy cases in the early 2010s. Bred specifically to minimize THC while keeping CBD high.
- •Suzy Q: CBD-dominant, often 15%+ CBD with THC in the low single digits. Less common on shelves but shows up at CBD-focused dispensaries.
Balanced 1:1 strains: some high, more clear-headed than THC-only
A roughly even CBD:THC ratio still produces a high, just a gentler and less anxious one than a THC-dominant strain at the same total cannabinoid load. This is the category most new medical patients land on.
- •Cannatonic: near 1:1 CBD to THC, calming with mild euphoria. One of the original balanced-ratio strains bred specifically for this purpose.
- •Harlequin: usually closer to 5:2 CBD to THC, so it leans even further toward clear-headed. A common daytime pick.
- •Pennywise: a 1:1 cross of Harlequin and Jack the Ripper. Reported as more body-relaxing than Harlequin at a similar ratio.
CBD-leaning sativas for daytime use
For users who want CBD's reported calming effect without any sedation, a sativa-leaning high-CBD strain is the closer match.
- •Sour Tsunami: one of the first strains specifically bred for a high CBD to THC ratio, sativa-leaning and alert rather than sleepy.
- •Ringo's Gift: named for Lawrence Ringo, an early CBD-strain breeder. Often tests 20%+ CBD with modest THC, reported as functional and mellow rather than intoxicating.
How to actually verify CBD content
"High CBD" isn't a regulated term. The only way to know what you're actually buying is the certificate of analysis (COA), the lab test result that should be posted at the dispensary or available by QR code on the package. Look at the ratio, not just the CBD percentage on its own: a strain can be high in CBD and still high in THC.
If a shop can't produce a current COA for a specific batch, treat any high-CBD claim as unverified.
Pick by ratio, not by the words on the label. Near-zero-THC strains like ACDC or Charlotte's Web for minimal intoxication, 1:1 strains like Cannatonic or Harlequin for a gentler high, CBD-forward sativas like Sour Tsunami or Ringo's Gift for daytime use. Always check the COA.
- ⚠CBD can inhibit CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that metabolizes many prescription medications. See /interactions before combining with other drugs.
- ⚠"High CBD" strain names get relabeled and mislabeled across dispensaries. The genetics behind a given name can vary batch to batch; the COA is the only reliable check.
